Private Lessons
Private lessons are offered on all popular instruments and voice. We have found that private one-on-one instruction allows students to progress at their own pace and gain the best understanding of musical techniques. Students can start private lessons as young as 5 years old and can start private lessons any time of the year or month so there's no need to wait to get started. A variety of styles are taught such as pop, jazz, rock and classical. Contact the school office in your location to see which times and days are available. Instruments offered include: piano, voice, guitar, bass, drums, flute, saxophone, clarinet, and violin. Click here to read more on each particular instrument.

Exam Preparation
If students wish they may take optional exams offered by the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). The Royal Conservatory is a national testing board that is based in Toronto. The RCM allows students to test for certain grades in an instrument or voice. For example a student could prepare to take a grade 2 piano exam. To do this the student would purchase the grade 2 music books and learn the required material. Exams are held 3 times per year at various locations around Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara. Most of our students choose to learn their instrument recreationally and do not take exams. If a student does wish to take an exam our school can fully prepare them for any level of testing. We have helped hundreds of student complete exams successfully.

Theory Classes
This group will prepare students for their Royal Conservatory of Music theory exams. The preparatory curriculum will be covered Sept-Dec with the RCM exam in mid December. The grade 1 curriculum will be covered Jan-May with the RCM exam in mid May. RCM exams must be booked through the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto.

Recitals and Concerts
Students are given an opportunity to perform in over 10 recitals held over the course of the year. All of our music recitals have free admission, so the whole family and friends can attend to enjoy the performances. Our tradition at the school is to celebrate a job well done at the end of each recital with a reception where the audience and the performers can enjoy refreshments and snacks, making the experience even more memorable and enjoyable.

Reasons which make us the best choice for you

Focus On Teaching
All our teachers do is teach. The front desk staff takes care of the rest, scheduling, telephone calls, etc. This leaves the teachers free to specialize in one thing - providing the highest quality of music instruction.

University & College Trained Teachers
Our instructors are highly qualified and many have extensive performance experience. Most importantly, our instructors strive to relate their teaching to each individual student's learning style.

All Ages - Beginners to Advanced
Our current students range from 3 years old to many students in their 60's and 70's. We take care to teach what you want to learn so music is rewarding for students of all ages and levels.

Private Lessons & Group Music Lessons
Different students require different teaching approaches. Some students progress best with the peer interaction and class motivation of a group session. Other students prefer the focused concentration of an individual one on one lesson. Once a student is more advanced it will be necessary to take private lessons to master the advanced techniques of an instrument or voice with individual attention. Make sure that your student has the option to select the learning style that is best suited for them.

Regular Concerts and Recitals
Recitals and concerts are held at least twice a year. These provide students with performance experience and build confidence. Participation in music festivals, competitions and workshops is also available.

Exam & Audition Preparation
We offer full training in repertoire, studies, technique, ear training and sight reading to prepare classical students for Royal Conservatory exams and university auditions.

Theory Classes
Classes are taught in preparation for exams in all levels of Royal Conservatory theory, history, harmony, counterpoint, and analysis.

Kindermusik Program
From birth, children are exposed to the basics of music in a fun supportive group environment. This program builds a solid foundation for later success in private lessons.

Musical Theatre
Our musical theatre program teaches stage dance and includes a voice component. This program is unique in that in addition to providing a top quality dance instructor to teach the choreography, our musical theatre classes also have one of our voice teachers from our music school come in every week to cover the vocal component.

Adult Lesson Card - We understand that a weekly commitment to a lesson time is not always practical for adult students. Adult lessons are available for all instruments. The Adult Card gives you ten 30-minute lessons that can be scheduled at your convenience with your teacher.

At what age is a child ready for private instrument instruction?

For children, starting at the right age is a key element to the success of their lessons. Some people will tell you "the sooner the better" but this attitude can actually backfire and be a negative. If a child is put into lessons too soon they may feel overwhelmed and frustrated and want to stop lessons. The last thing you want to do is turn a child off music just because they had one unpleasant experience which could have been prevented. Sometimes if the child waits a year or two to start private lessons their progress can be much faster. For children ages newborn to seven a great option is to enrol in a group music program that has age specific classes with appropriate activities for each level of development, such as Kindermusik.  There are also group keyboard and guitar lessons for children who are not quite ready for one-on-one instruction.

A child who enjoys going to the piano and indicates a strong interest in playing the piano (or any other instrument) may still not be ready for private lessons.  In addition to interest, a child must be ready to accept the rules, guidelines and suggestions of the teacher.  Will the child still be interested and not frustrated when the teacher asks the child to play a certain way, or hold his hand in a certain position? Additional considerations include fine motor control as well as the maturity and attention span necessary for daily, individual practice.  Will the child happily focus for 30 minutes on a series of directed tasks? A child with a strong foundation in movement, vocal development, and listening is more likely to be successful and remain motivated than a child without.  Consideration needs to be given to the importance of skill building and motivation over a long period of time rather than how early ones starts.  Most importantly that the child enjoys their musical experience!

Benefits of Ensembles

Ensembles are a great way for children and adults to learn music. Taking group classes along with private lessons can facilitate learning at an advanced speed. Group classes are also a good choice for students who have never taken music before. Classes are fun for children and adults, and allow for the students to interact socially. Group classes are great for developing social skills, and make learning music fun by being able to share music making with their peers. Additionally, playing in a group setting aids in combating those performance butterflies normally present when playing a solo. The ensemble programme consists of various performance levels and styles. Each group meets weekly for a 45-60 minute coaching session with an instructor.

Check out the variety of ensembles being offered at the Performance School of Music - Burlington, Ancaster or St-. Catharines for children and adults.
